They are relatively safe around kids in a classroom, or at a university also.
Beware of cheap laser cutters with class 1 lasers which can severely harm the eyes & even cause blindness.
Class 4 lasers when reflected or refracted can still be dangerous.
With Class 1, indirect exposure is highly unlikely.
